Buon-Cattivi Press is a micro-publishing label based in Adelaide South Australia. South Australia is lucky to have a history of publishers dedicated to the release of local, creative content and Buon-Cattivi Press seeks to complement this local publishing space with its niche angles and concepts.
The concept of including another micro publishing label in the South Australian publishing scene arose from founder Dr Alex Dunkin’s work researching the contemporary literary scene in Italy. The name Buon-Cattivi (Good Villains) originated from this work as a nod to the cannibale genre and how the best writing can arise from messing with and breaking conventions.
Since its inception in 2018, Buon-Cattivi Press has focussed its attention on publishing emerging and experimental voices. Its boutique approach allows for a more collaborative process with each new writer and text to produce a final product that realises the author’s intent behind their stories.
The label releases just one to two books a year, each published with a unique art piece as its cover. The covers are the work of local artist Andrew Crooks, who styles the cover pieces to match the desires and qualities of both the author and the manuscript.
Buon-Cattivi Press has had the privilege of publishing debut novels, emerging creative researchers, and never-before-read essentials of Australian queer history. Our 2020 verse novella Dona Juanita and the Love of Boys by Gabrielle Everall was listed in the Australian Book Review’s Books of the Year.
